Why We're Not Going Mobile, Yet

Why We’re Not Going Mobile, Yet

All the cool kids are going mobile, right?  It’s the next logical step, isn’t it?  Depending on your institution and the population you serve, maybe it isn’t right for your campus now or maybe ever.  Jessica and Kim will talk through some of the reasons that have kept their campuses from moving to mobile and maybe give you some things to think about before you jump on the bandwagon.

Discussions Questions

1. Has your campus begun considering digital or mobile credentials?
2. What are the main issues holding your campus back?
3. How do you see the discussion playing out at your institution over the next 3-5 years?

Facilitators:

Jessica Bender, Palm Beach State College
Kim Pfeffer, Emory University

From Jorrun Liston to Everyone:

Welcome everyone!  We are recording this session and will post it to naccuTV.

From Jorrun Liston to Everyone:

Kim and Jessica will take questions and insights at the end.  Feel free to type in this chat to everyone or raise your hand.

From Kyle Harris to Everyone:

Are all of the doors on your two campuses controlled with electronic access/badges?

From Sylvia Gnieser-Castonguay, Bates College to Everyone:

Can you talk about ~cost for mobile credential per student? I am wondering, if we could offer mobile as a choice. You can have a mobile ID or card ID.

From Jon Palmisano to Everyone:

Is the potential loss of card replacement revenue a factor when considering switching to mobile?

From Myron Esterson to Everyone:

We are in the same boat – fully magstripe. We would love to go mobile but the funding is an issue. Plus, we are being asked if we go fully mobile, and there are no replacement card fees anymore (thanks Apple!), how do we make up the lost revenue?

From Rostyslav Chen – MSU to Everyone:

How do you start a conversation with depts. which aren’t receptive? Our door access is managed by the dept. of police and public safety. We are not being engaged on their current projects such as updating door access (prompted by mass shooting in 2023) which I am attempting to insert ourselves on. We don’t even know if the new door access systems will be mobile compatible for example.

From Neal Lujan to Everyone:

Jessica, I have a couple questions about your digital/virtual card model:  Can students carry both a plastic card and a virtual?  If so, how do you manage card sequence for lost cards?  Does your vendor support the digital/virtual card seamlessly?  What are the challenges, if any?

From Sylvia Gnieser-Castonguay, Bates College to Everyone:

This question is for Jessica – can you scan your virtual card to get into a building or print w/ the virtual card?

From Courtney Petrizzi to Everyone:

We have a Commemorative Card for students who graduate ($50), we’ve increased our Community Card (non-UA rec cards) to $10 and now issue badges for $10 at time of printing for clinical students when they normally wouldn’t be charged anything when we were issued physical cards]

From Neal Lujan to Everyone:

Jessica, how long have you charged the ID Access Fee (if I got the name of that fee right) and how do you define the reason it is charged?

From Diane Camper to Everyone:

What are the commemorative cards used for?

From Tracy Leota (CNU) to Everyone:

Here at Christopher Newport Univ. We are not mobile yet, but we have started charging our conference groups $10 a card per guest and we are charging a fee for Life Long Learning cards

From Nathan Gray to Everyone:

does anyone get student fees (comp fees) in their card office? We’ve been fighting for that for years. A lot of aux. dept. here get student fees but we do not.

From Courtney Petrizzi to Everyone:

Yes, and it’s only available for those who do graduate (if they don’t graduate, we refund the purchase), their mobile card is removed after they are no longer enrolled- and Commemorative Cards do not have any tech it’s strictly memorabilia.

From Nathan Gray to Everyone:

do they get to take a new photo for the comm card?

From Sylvia Gnieser-Castonguay, Bates College to Everyone:

Thank you very much. That was very helpful.

From Olivia Lanzoni to Everyone:

               Thank you very much!

From Richard Tamborelli RISD to Everyone:

               Thank you all. Great job!!
